SB Museum of Natural History Welcomes New Trustee Barbara Holzman, Ph.D.

The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is pleased to announce that Barbara Holzman, Ph.D., was voted into its board of trustees on May 13, 2022.

Barbara Holzman, Ph.D., is professor emerita at San Francisco State University in the Department of Geography and Environment where she was a professor for 25 years. She holds Ph.D. and M.A. degrees from UC Berkeley and UCLA, respectively, and a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley. She has always been passionate about the environment, and in addition to teaching in her department, she cofounded the Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies Program at SF State and served as its program director for several years. The focus of Dr. Holzman’s past research and writing has been biogeography and natural resource management. She retired from SF State in 2016. She currently serves as an associate researcher at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and a part-time consultant for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Dr. Holzman moved to Santa Barbara in 2016 and loves living on the Mesa. Her passions are nature and environmental education, and making nature experiences accessible to all. She and her husband Dave enjoy traveling, birdwatching, whale watching, hiking with their dog Molly, and an occasional Mahjong game. Barbara currently serves as a docent for the Museum and a volunteer in the Butterfly Pavilion.

She shared, “I am happy to be joining the board to support the Museum's mission in creating nature experiences that are accessible to all, as well as supporting the next generation of scientists and environmentally conscious citizens. The Museum is part of the heritage of Santa Barbara, and I feel our job is to help show the importance of local nature in our everyday lives and our survival as a species.”
